RV converter is not charging the battery

Plugged into shore power, but the house battery drains and 12V loads fade.

Quick answer

Measure at the battery terminals with shore power connected. A working converter holds roughly 13.6V, and a converter in bulk charge mode may show over 14V. If you read battery resting voltage of around 12.6V or less with shore power on, the converter is not delivering. The order to check is the converter's own AC breaker, its DC output fuses (usually a pair of automotive blade fuses on the unit itself), then the battery's ability to accept a charge at all.

What usually causes it

  • Blown converter DC output fuses

    Most common

    Most converters have two blade fuses on the unit protecting the DC output. When these blow, 12V loads still work from the battery, so nothing seems wrong until the battery runs down.

  • Corroded or loose battery connections

    Most common

    Resistance at the terminals looks like a dead converter. Voltage measured at the converter can be fine while the battery sees far less.

  • Sulphated or failed battery

    Common

    A deeply discharged lead-acid battery may refuse to accept charge. A converter feeding a battery that cannot take a charge presents exactly the same symptoms as a dead converter.

  • AC breaker for the converter tripped

    Common

    The converter has its own 120V breaker in the panel. If it has tripped, everything else on shore power still works and only charging stops.

  • Multi-stage converter stuck in float

    Less common

    Some converters hold about 13.2V in float and never step up to bulk charge without a trigger. A battery that is genuinely low will then charge very slowly.

  • Converter failure

    Less common

    Cooling fan seized, output section failed. Real, but far less common than the items above, and worth confirming by elimination rather than assumption.

Step-by-step diagnosis

Work in this order. Each step is cheaper or safer than the one after it, so stop as soon as the symptom clears.

  1. Measure at the battery with shore power connected

    Set the meter to DC volts and read directly at the battery posts, not at a panel display. Around 13.6V means the converter is working. Around 12.6V or lower means it is not charging. Below 12V means the battery is discharged as well.

  2. Check the converter's AC breaker

    Find the 120V breaker feeding the converter in the distribution panel and cycle it fully off then on. A breaker that trips again immediately points at a fault inside the converter and stops the diagnosis there.

  3. Pull and inspect the converter DC output fuses

    These are usually two blade fuses mounted on the converter itself inside the power center, separate from the main 12V fuse block. Pull them and check visually and with continuity. Replace with the same rating.

  4. Clean and torque the battery terminals

    Disconnect negative first, wire-brush the posts and clamps until bright, reconnect and tighten properly. Then re-measure at the posts. Corrosion here explains a surprising number of converter complaints.

    Remove rings and watches. A shorted wrench across a battery post carries enough current to weld.

  5. Test whether the battery accepts charge

    With the converter confirmed live, watch the battery voltage over 30 minutes. A healthy discharged battery climbs steadily. A battery stuck at the same reading, or one that gets warm, is failed and needs replacing regardless of converter condition.

  6. Check the converter cooling fan

    Many converters run their fan only under load. If the fan is seized or blocked with dust, the unit will thermally limit or shut down. Clear the vents and confirm the fan spins freely with power off.

  7. Rule out a battery disconnect switch or relay

    Many RVs fit a battery disconnect or a battery cut-off relay that isolates the house bank. If it is open or the relay has failed, the converter will show good output while the battery sees nothing.

  8. Confirm the fix under real load

    Run the furnace or the water pump for a few minutes with shore power connected and watch that voltage stays near 13.6V. A converter that collapses under load has an output fault even if it reads correctly at rest.

  • Lead-acid batteries vent hydrogen. Do not smoke or create sparks near them, and ventilate the compartment.
  • Disconnect shore power before working inside the power distribution center. It contains live 120V connections next to the 12V section.
  • Wear eye protection when working around flooded batteries.

Anything inside the 120V side of the power center, converter replacement, and lithium conversions that need a compatible charge profile. Fitting lithium batteries behind a converter designed for lead-acid is a common and expensive mistake.

Do I need a new converter for lithium batteries?
