No 12V power anywhere in the RV

When every 12V device dies at once, the fault is upstream of all of them, so ignore individual appliances entirely. Check four things in order: the battery disconnect switch, which is the single most common answer; the main 12V fuse or breaker at the battery; the battery terminals themselves; and the converter output if you are on shore power without a healthy battery. A partial failure, where some things work and others do not, is a different problem and points at a branch fuse.

What usually causes it

  • Battery disconnect switch open

    Almost every RV has one, and it is often in an unlit exterior bay where it gets knocked. Some are rotary, some are a push switch inside the door, and some are a solenoid controlled by a switch.

  • Main fuse or breaker blown

    Most common

    There is usually a large fuse or auto-reset breaker within a short run of the battery positive terminal that protects the whole house circuit.

  • Corroded or loose battery terminals

    Common

    Enough resistance at a terminal will drop the whole system even though the battery itself measures fine.

  • Battery completely discharged or failed

    Common

    A battery below about 10.5V will not run the coach. A battery with an internal open circuit measures nothing at all.

  • Converter dead and no battery in circuit

    Less common

    If the battery is disconnected or dead and the converter has failed, there is no DC source at all even with shore power connected.

  • Failed battery disconnect solenoid

    Less common

    On systems that use a solenoid rather than a mechanical switch, the solenoid itself can fail and leave the circuit permanently open.

Step-by-step diagnosis

Work in this order. Each step is cheaper or safer than the one after it, so stop as soon as the symptom clears.

  1. Find and cycle the battery disconnect

    Check the exterior battery bay, near the entry door and inside the power center. Cycle it fully off and back on. This costs nothing and resolves a large share of complete 12V failures.

  2. Measure the battery

    At the posts, look for 12.4V or higher. Around 12.0V is heavily discharged. Below 10.5V will not run the coach. A reading of zero means an internal failure or an open connection.

  3. Clean and tighten the terminals

    Disconnect negative first. Wire-brush the posts and clamps until bright metal shows, reassemble, and tighten firmly. Reconnect negative last. Then re-measure at the clamp rather than the post to confirm the joint is good.

    Remove rings and watches, and keep tools from bridging both posts.

  4. Check the main fuse or breaker

    Follow the positive cable from the battery and look for a large inline fuse or an auto-reset breaker within a short distance. Test it for continuity rather than judging by eye, since these do not always look blown.

  5. Verify the ground path

    Check the main negative connection to the chassis. A corroded chassis ground produces exactly the same symptoms as a dead battery and gets overlooked because people concentrate on the positive side.

  6. Test converter output on shore power

    With shore power connected, read voltage at the battery. Roughly 13.6V means the converter is alive. Nothing means the converter has failed or its own fuses are gone, and you are relying entirely on the battery.

  7. Distinguish total failure from partial

    If some 12V items now work and others do not, you are past the main fault and into branch circuits. Check individual blade fuses in the distribution panel for the affected circuits, and test them with a meter rather than by sight.

  8. Rule out a failed disconnect solenoid

    On solenoid-based systems, listen for a click when the switch is operated and measure voltage on both sides of the solenoid. Voltage in with none out means the solenoid has failed.

Safety notes

  • Batteries can deliver enormous short-circuit current. Remove jewelry and work with insulated tools.
  • Lead-acid batteries vent hydrogen. Ventilate the compartment and avoid sparks.
  • Disconnect shore power before opening the power distribution center.

When to call a professional

Melted or discolored wiring, a burning smell, or repeated main fuse failures. Those indicate a short in the harness, which needs tracing properly rather than replacing fuses until one holds.
