RV leveling jacks will not retract

One or more jacks stay extended and the system will not retract them.

  • Controller error state

    Many systems latch an error code and refuse to operate until cleared. The code usually names the failed jack or the excessive-travel condition that stopped it.

  • Corroded or bent jack ram

    A ram that has corroded from road salt or been bent by a hidden obstacle will bind. Chrome rams need periodic cleaning and a light protective film.

  • Failed pump, solenoid or motor

    Less common

    A pump that hums without moving fluid, or an electric jack motor that clicks without turning, is the genuine hardware failure case.

Step-by-step diagnosis

Work in this order. Each step is cheaper or safer than the one after it, so stop as soon as the symptom clears.

  1. Check battery voltage under load

    Read at the battery while a helper holds the retract button. A dip below about 11V is your answer. Connect shore power, let the converter work, or add a jump pack, then retry before touching anything else.

  2. Find and read the error code

    Look at the controller display or panel LEDs and match the code against your system's manual. Codes typically identify which jack stalled and why, which saves a long process of elimination.

  3. Check the system fuse

    Locate the dedicated leveling system fuse, normally a high-amperage fuse near the battery or at the pump. Replace with the same rating. A fuse that blows again immediately means a jammed jack or a shorted motor.

  4. Check hydraulic fluid the right way

    Fluid can only be checked correctly with all jacks fully retracted. If jacks are down, you cannot get a true reading, so if the reservoir looks low with jacks extended that is expected. Top up only to the manufacturer's specified fluid type once retracted.

  5. Look for physical binding

    Inspect each ram for corrosion, bends, road debris and ice. Clean corroded chrome gently and wipe on a light protective film. A jack that has sunk into soft ground and tilted will bind badly.

  6. Retract manually using the documented procedure

    For hydraulic systems, the pump has a manual release valve that lets the jacks retract under their own weight or with hand pressure. For electric jacks, there is a hex drive at the motor that accepts a socket and a drill. Follow your manual's exact procedure, in the order it specifies.

    Releasing a hydraulic valve lets the RV drop. Make sure nobody is under or beside the coach, and expect movement.

  7. Cycle the system fully after any repair

    Once retracted, run a full extend and retract cycle to purge trapped air from the hydraulic circuit and confirm every jack responds. Air in the system produces spongy, uneven operation.

  8. Prevent the next occurrence

    Use pads under jacks on soft ground, retract fully before travel, rinse the rams after salted roads, and check fluid level at the start of each season with jacks retracted.

  • Never work under an RV supported only by its leveling jacks. They are leveling devices, not lifting or support equipment. Use rated jack stands.
  • Expect the coach to drop when a hydraulic release valve is opened.

Hydraulic leaks, a cylinder that will not hold, bent rams and control board replacement. Hydraulic systems hold high pressure and a leaking cylinder is not a roadside repair.

Can I drive with a leveling jack stuck down?

No. A jack that is even partly extended will catch on the road surface and can be torn off, taking part of the frame mount with it. Retract it manually before moving.

When should I check the hydraulic fluid level?

Only with every jack fully retracted. With jacks extended the fluid is in the cylinders, so the reservoir reads low and topping up then will overfill the system and force fluid out when you retract.

Why do my jacks extend but not retract?

Classic low voltage or low fluid. Extending is partly assisted by the weight of the coach; retracting needs the pump to do all the work, so a marginal system fails in that direction first.

Should I use jack pads?

Yes on anything other than concrete. Pads spread the load, stop the jack sinking into soft ground, and keep the foot out of standing water where it will corrode.
